  • Content Production

Copywriting, Journalism, Brand Identity & Marketing.

    First there was the word.

Above all else, I am a writer.

I write essays, stories and reviews for a wide variety of print and online media: the San Francisco Chronicle, Paste magazine, the Forward, Publishers Weekly, BKLYN, the Daily Beast (Newsweek), Hemispheres, Nerve.com. I've covered books, music, dating, travel, urban life, and more.

In New York, I was a publicist at Sacks & Co. I wrote marketing and publicity copy, launching media campaigns for entertainers like Rufus Wainright, k.d. lang, and Laura Veirs, and building a ground-up marketing and media identity for the New York performance center, Symphony Space.

I continue to produce copy, specializing in voice consistency and brand identity, working in diverse industries and with companies ranging from SparkNotes Publishing to Vertu Luxury Mobile Phones, About.com to the University of Wyoming, and more. I write short form and long, traditional magazine features, as well as short, social media-style posts.

  • Content Management

Personnel, HTML, CSS, SEO and Content Budgeting.

    The word must be organized.

If clarity is the goal, organization is key.

For four years I served as Managing Editor of Flak magazine, an independent webzine which regularly attracted 250,000 unique readers a month. At Flak I managed personnel—reading and responding to pitches, hiring and overseeing freelancers, coders, designers and artists, as well as updating HTML and CSS, budgeting weekly content and editing front page material for optimal reader retention and SEO.

While living in Buenos Aires, I worked with English-language newspaper, The Argentina Independent, to launch a literary supplement focusing on the publication of translated writing. The bilingual position involved the hiring and management of freelance translators and writers and coordination with media and publishing industry contacts in the US, UK and Argentina.

Writing might not be a team sport, but publishing—online and off—is.

  • Content Editing

Editing of blogs, microsites, and e-newsletters for voice, clarity, and effect.

    As good as my word(s).

    Clean copy is clear copy.

I don't just produce and manage copy, but edit it as well. At Flak, The Argentina lndependent, and About.com, I worked as a content editor, overseeing the production of email newsletters, microsite development and blog publication, wielding a (virtual) red pen to help achieve clarity and consistency of voice, style and effect in a range of marketing and user experience (UX) material.

I also worked as a copyeditor with Demand Media Studios, where I was tasked with ensuring content published on their subsidiary websites (like eHow.com) were within strict structural and style guidelines.

These days, I work alongside an experienced team of social media strategists to handle Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other daily content services for clients like BritBox, a BBC, iTV joint product: "the biggest streaming collection of British TV...ever."

It's a combination of everything I do, but it remains focused on one thing: producing clear, compelling communication.

Social Media Marketing, Content Development, and Social Strategy

With Kyuzo, I'm part of a dynamic social media team developing content strategy, and maintaining engaging social media brand personalities on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and more, for millions of clients, fans, and customers. One current project is the BBC, iTV streaming site BritBox. Check it out.

    Content Management and Production

With About.com, I helped create and upkeep a series of microsites focused on music and pop culture. While overseeing a team of freelancers, I wrote and budgeted weekly blog content, conducted interviews and published material on a range of topics intended to connect with About.com's broad readership. I also oversaw the circulation of weekly e-newsletters which, along with my microsite visitors, connected with 30,000+ unique readers per day.

    Vertu Luxury Mobile Phones—

Content Production, UX, & Brand Voice

Part of a team implementing global content strategy for "Vertu Life," a marketing platform for Vertu Luxury Mobile Phones. Our work was intended to connect Vertu phone users with luxury brands throughout the world by focusing on "passion points:" art and culture, fine dining, champagne wines and spirits, luxury travel, business intelligence, VIP entertainment, elite world sport and fashion. Daily content was published on 12,000-15,000 devices worldwide and in 7 languages.

    Flak Magazine—

Content Management & Editing, UX Development

When I joined Flak, it was a bustling independent webmag publishing irreverent coverage of internet culture. I helped integrate more TV coverage and pop culture commentary into the mix, hiring a range of freelance writers and working with them to ensure the voice of their writing matched the Flak house style. This helped expand Flak's readership and kept it current in an ever-growing online media space. During that time, I also worked to improve Flak's social media presence and began an exploratory team to help brainstorm ways to optimize UX content for mobile phone- and tablet-based readers.

    The Argentina Independent—

Translation, Content & Personnel Management, Content Editing

At Buenos Aires-based English-language newspaper The Argentina Independent, I was brought on to establish a literary suppliment that complimented their robust news and current events reporting. Working with bilingual writers, translators and local artists and art reporters, I helped publish a year's worth of original content that connected to expatriate and international readers looking for an outsider's take on Argentine culture. Read an introduction to the section here; or a story—which I translated—here.

    Sacks & Co.—

Content Production, Marketing, Brand Voice & Style

As a team member of botique entertainment publicity firm Sacks & Co., I learned to craft clean copy that cut through the publicity dump distributed to journalists daily. I helped launch press outreach for nontraditional music by artists like Björk and Philip Glass, and worked with NYC's Symphony Space to both develop a house PR voice and style and ensure that it was implemented consistently across all marketing material in media outreach for their 2007-2008 performance season.

    Content Production

For online sex and culture magazine Nerve, I contributed cultural reporting, dating essays, and interviews with top writers over a period of 18 months, working with editors to craft copy that balanced humor with intelligence and connected to Nerve's young, urban readership. Read some of my work: an interview with Pulitzer Prize winning author Richard Ford; a mysterious date involving a Fortuneteller; cultural commentary on dating at the popular website 'Stuff White People Like'; or an interview with Pulitzer Prize winning author Jane Smiley.

    San Francisco Chronicle—

    Content Production

I was a regular contributor to the San Francisco Chronicle Arts & Culture section, penning book reviews of novels and memoirs and grappling with questions of identity in contemporary culture. Read some of my work here: 'End of the Jews' is more of a beginningAfrican explores a triracial Ohio townSearch for cure tests sick man's dignityHow loving dogs makes us more humanDesperate lives viewed through the refracting lens of historyEvery happy relationship is differentYoung, unsure—and Jewish, by the way

    Demand Media Studios—

    Copy Editing

While living in Tulum, Mexico, I honed my editing chops as a freelance Copy Editor with Demand Media Studios, working to improve style, voice and word usage in freelance-submitted writing on a wide range of topics and published across many of their subsidiary websites, like eHow.com and LIVESTRONG.com.

    University of Wyoming—

Microsite Copywriting, Blog Editing and Content Management

At the University of Wyoming, after a year of teaching College Writing, I now help develop and update microsites relating to the English Department and the MFA program in Creative Writing, including the admissions webpage, the program blog and the department's online marketing material at UWYO.edu.
